Dr Mensa Otabil has added his voice to calls being made to government to extend the ban on church services.
Pastor Otabil who is the founder of the International Central Gospel Church thinks lifting the ban too early could jeopardize the fight against COVID-19.
‘Just when we thought in Ghana we were having control over the situation, we are beginning to realise the virus has a mind of its own. It doesn’t seem to correspond to some of the efforts we are making, he said on Sunday.
Pastor Otabil maintained that ‘This is not the time for churches to consider gathering together in assemblies because the crisis before us is not going down’.
All churches in the country have temporarily shut down in compliance with government’s directives on ban public gatherings to control the spread of coronavirus.
A few days ago, leaders of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) attempted to lobby the government to lift the ban on church services.
The clergymen outlined guidelines which they thought could defensively check the spread of COVID-19, should they be allowed to congregate.
The Apostle General of Royalhouse Chapel International explained on JoyNews’ Beyond The Lockdown that:
‘We are ready to contain the disease should the ban be lifted. We are ready to control the numbers, follow the etiquette and the protocols, do multiple services with smaller numbers.
He added that ‘We will be responsible and manage it better than what is going on in our market places where the spread is going on now’.
But government seems to have ignored the plea based on the rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the country.
President Akufo-Addo announced an extension of the ban on church gatherings by three more weeks when he addressed the nation Sunday evening.
He also stated in his 9th address to the nation that all forms of social gatherings (festivals, wedding ceremonies, religious activities) are also prohibited till the end of May.
