Hesbon Imbwaka, a Kenyan gardener who has worked at the German Embassy in Nairobi for 34 years, has turned down a retirement package of 68 luxury cars in favour of five chickens and a sack of chicken feed.
According to reports, German Ambassador to Kenya, Sebastian Groth, had jokingly promised Imbwaka one Mercedes and one BMW for every year of service, totaling 68 cars. However, when the time came to collect his reward, Imbwaka stunned everyone by opting for the humble chickens instead.
‘I want to start a poultry farm and I believe this is a great opportunity to do so’, Imbwaka explained.
The Ambassador was taken aback by Imbwaka’s decision but ultimately respected his choice.
‘We presented him with the chickens and feed, and he seemed thrilled’, said a spokesperson for the embassy. ‘It’s not every day we get to see someone so passionate about poultry farming’.
Imbwaka’s decision has sparked a mix of reactions on social media, with some praising his practicality and others joking about the unusual retirement choice.
While some may see Imbwaka’s decision as unconventional, he believes it’s a smart move.
‘Chickens will provide for me and my family for years to come’, he said. ‘Cars would have been nice, but they’re just that – cars. Chickens are a sustainable livelihood’.
As Imbwaka begins his new life as a poultry farmer, many are left wondering what could have been if he had chosen the luxury cars.
Imbwaka’s story will go down in history as one of the most unusual retirement tales.
