Afrobeat sensation King Promise claimed the overall Artiste of the Year title at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).
The event took place at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, May 10,2025.
So, King Promise emerged as the TGMA 2025 Artiste of the Year beating top nominees in the same category—Stonebwoy, Black Sheriff, Kwaku Smoke, King Paluta, Joe Mettle, and Gospel group Team Eternity.
Prior to the awards night, Ken Addy, veteran entertainment critic and also host of Jazz on Joy and Ken’s Music Mix on Joy FM said that though he believes all the other artistes including Stonebwoy have worked harder in the year under review, King Promise is well deserving of the topmost award.
‘I always like to look out for new things. Stonebwoy is an established musician, if you ask me. Stone has won before. So I am always looking out for new people to win. And I am saying that as far as I am concerned, I will be very [delighted] if King Promise wins, because he holds so much promise and what he has done in that year is very promising’, he stated on Showbiz A-Z.
That’s the opinion of Ken, anyway. But his desire to ‘looking out for new people to win’ the Artiste of Year must be seen in the context of rewarding genuine talents.
The Ghana Music Awards defines the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category as the artiste(s) adjudged by the Academy, Board and the General Public as the artiste with the highest audience appeal and popularity in the year under review. The artiste(s) must have released a hit single/EP/album and must be one of the artistes with the highest nominations in the year under review’.
Ken Promise Exposed
Artiste the Year? Let’s be real, does King Promise really deserve it?
Here are three key reasons King Promise as TGMA Artiste of the Year is flawed:
King Promise’s recent hits have been collaborations galore! He isn’t really showcasing his own talent but he is ridiculously walking in the shadows of other talented artistes.
Again, when was the last time King Promise dropped a solo banger that shook the music industry? Indeed, his recent output cannot be said to be promising but underwhelming!
More so, some sincere fans and critics admit that other artistes worked harder and produced better music during the year under review, yet King Promise took the crown.
The general concern is that if King Promise has to be rewarded, it must be done based on his artistic contributions to the music industry.
It is time for the organisers to rethink the voting process. The current voting system undermines the credibility of the industry awards scheme.
For you, does King Promise truly deserve the Artiste of the Year award? Share your thoughts and let’s get real about his music!
