US President Joe Biden has officially announced that he will not stand for re-election.
In a statement, President Biden,81 said ‘It is in the best interest of my party and the country’ but it had been the greatest honour of his life to serve as president.
Prior to the announcement on Sunday evening, there have been intense pressure from fellow Democrats to backdown plans of seeking another term of office in the forthcoming elections.
Biden has meanwhile given his endorsement in the presidential race to Vice President Kamala Harris.
Though Kamala has the backing of the current president, it is not clear at the moment if she will be selected unopposed as the new candidate.
On the opposite end, Republican candidate Donald Trump, also an ex-president is pushing hard to win the US presidential election. But his second coming to the White House will be determined in the next few months at the polls.
