Entertainment critic and media personality, MC Kelly has expressed concern about the growing mistrust between musicians and radio presenters, pointing to popular acts such as R2Bees, Feli Nuna, and Efya as clear examples.
According to MC Kelly, an event MC and also host of Showbiz Today on KTU Radio, some artistes are increasingly hesitant to honour radio interviews because they feel presenters are more focused on creating sensational headlines and viral clips than genuinely promoting their music.
‘Instead of using radio as a bridge to connect artistes with fans, some presenters focus on controversial soundbites that generate social media engagement but leave the music in the shadows’. Kelly said such practices tarnish the relationship between traditional media and creatives.
He said ‘Take R2Bees for instance — they rarely show up for interviews anymore because they believe radio presenters twist their words just to chase trends.
‘Feli Nuna has openly spoken about how interviews sometimes turn into unnecessary drama instead of focusing on her work, and even Efya has raised concerns about being misrepresented on air. This is why many musicians are now reluctant to sit in those studios’.
MC Kelly warned that if this culture continues, more artistes will sideline radio in favour of digital platforms, podcasts, and direct fan engagement, where they feel their narratives are safer and their artistry better appreciated.
