The President of the Ghana Stammering Association,Emmanuel Addo has advised fluent speakers to desist from completing the sentences of People Who Stammer (PWS) during conversations as this practice prevents stammers from fully expressing themselves and being truly heard.
The PWS President explained that stammering is not a result of forgetfulness or an uncertainty as to what to say, thus, completing the sentences prevented stammers from being heard.
Addo told The Mirror in an interview, closely monitored by Kasatintin.com that ‘From experience, those who do this will realise that the person who stammers goes back to repeat what they were supposedly helped to say.
This is because stammering is not a result of forgetfulness or uncertainty as to what to say. I would suggest that the public ask the person who stammers what they find useful’.
According to Addo, stammering is a common condition beyond a person’s control. He therefore appealed to the public to stop the habit of making fun of PWS, describing such practice as cruel.
He urged fluent speakers to show empathy and offer support to assist stammers to speak freely.
