Kasatintin.com can report that Nigeria army chief, Lt-Gen Ibrahim Attahiru has been killed in a plane crash in the north-western state of Kaduna on Friday evening.
Some 10 other military officers, including the plane’s crew have also been confirmed dead.
Officials say the incident occurred as the plane attempted to land at the Kaduna International Airport in bad weather.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said he’s ‘deeply saddened over the air crash’.
Buhari said in a statement on Friday, May 21, 2021 ‘The crash is one mortal blow to our underbelly, at a time our armed forces are poised to end the security challenges facing the country’.
He described the deceased as ‘heroes who paid the ultimate price for peace and security in the land’.
Gen Attahiru, 54, took up his post on January 26, and was on an official trip to Kaduna when the incident occurred.
His appointment was a tactical step taken by the Nigerian government to reposition the army to conquer the decade-long jihadist insurgency in the country.
Friday’s crash comes barely three months after a Nigerian military plane crashed on a runway in Abuja, killing all seven people on board.
