Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has paid his last respect to his predecessor late Jerry John Rawlings who has been laid in state at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Rawlings died on 12 November 2020 in Accra after a short illness. He was 73 years.
President Kufuor and Rawlings were seen by the public as ‘best enemies’ as both parties enjoyed throwing a little jabs at each other in the media and on political platforms.
Some people however considered this banter as part of a grand scheme to dominate the Ghana political and media space.
President Kufuor ruled Ghana from January 7, 2001 to January 7, 2009 and introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) , Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses and also built a new pesidential palace, Flagstaff House for the country.
He also oversaw the re-denomination of the local currency– old Ghana Cedis to the new Ghana Cedis.
Kufuor was nicknamed ‘Mr Sexy Eyes’ and ‘the Gentile Giant’. He was hit by a sex scandal during his administration.
Media reports alleged that he had an extra marital affair with a woman known as Gizelle Yajzi and fathered her twins.
This became the biggest news in Ghana between 2004 and 2005 after Madame Gizelle Yazji, who described herself as a one-time Economic Advisor to President John Agyekum Kufuor promised to return to Ghana with the children — but that never happened.
Born on December 8, 1938, Kufuor is now 82 years old. Due to old age, the former President sat in a wheel chair when he attended Rawlings’ funeral.
