It has emerged that the slain Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Ekow Quansah Hayford was married to two women.
Ghanaians are shocked about the latest news because until now, they were aware of only one widow, Ophelia Quansah Hayford.
Apparently, Ophelia Quansah is the first wife of the of the late MP.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has selected her to replace her late husband as the parliamentary candidate in the upcoming December 7 polls.
Common sense predicts that the Mfantseman seat will be a ‘cool chop’ contest as Ophelia is most likely to win lots of sympathy votes.
But others have strongly criticized her decision to engage in active politics at a time the demise of her husband is too fresh on everybody’s mind.
That aside, another woman who identifies herself as Sarah Quansah Hayford has caused a stir on social media minutes after she came forward and claimed that she is also legally married to the Mfantseman MP.
Sarah Quansah recounted how she became the MP’s second wife and said Ekow Quansah first met her in 2009 but got married to him on 8th June, 2013.
According to Sarah, the lawmaker told her he was a divorcee and had no wife.
She disclosed on Accra-based Kasapa FM that they got married at a public event and signed their marriage documents at the court, and have since lived together with the late MP in Tarkwa.
Sarah Quansah said she got to know that Hon. Quansah was still married to her first wife, Ophelia after the latter called her somewhere in 2016.
Sarah stated that ‘I asked what was the way forward and my late husband told me that he’ll sort out the issue and so I was waiting for his action. But since then I never heard from anyone including his first wife’.
She also went a step further to inform her mother-in-law about the issue.
‘When the matter came up I went to see his mother for a discussion and she told me to hold my peace and that the issue has already happened. It is true that her son is already married and has married me as well. All the family members know and accept that Ekow has two wives and so I shouldn’t be worried. This is what his mother told me’, Sarah Quansah added.
It has been suggested countless times that men should be allowed to marry as many women as they want.
Those who advance this argument believe that’s the surest means to deal with the broken heart syndrome in modern society.
