Kempinski Hotel is laying off about 85% of its staff as the hotel faces the real impact of the coronavirus pandemic on its business operations.
The 5-star luxury hotel will also close down four floors of its multi-storey structure as a move to cut down its operational cost.
Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta disclosed this on Friday saying:
‘For a hotel like Kempinski which has about 400 workers, they are letting 340 go home. They are closing about four floors of that hotel… And those become really difficult moments.
‘It is a sobering moment… we do get panic attacks as we wake up thinking of how best to do it’.
The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has been widely discussed in the media.
Experts predict more businesses will shut down in the coming days. This will lead to massive layoffs and in some cases, drastic pay cuts.
It is now clear that about 340 workers of Kempinski Hotel will lose their job.
Only God knows how these people and their family will survive this unplanned unemployment situation.
Throwback on Kempinski Hotel
Kempinski Hotel is undoubtedly a high class facility. It has acquired the reputation for charging exorbitant rates for some of its services.
The rates are however relatively cool for those who can afford it.
In 2016, social media citizens got outraged after Kempinski was ‘captured’ in a viral photo for selling a bowl of a popular Ghanaian meal ‘gari soakings’ at the price of Ghc 145.
People were dumbfounded as to how such a simple meal, which can be easily prepared at home at the cost of Ghc 1.00 was allegedly being sold at Kempinski for more than a hundred Ghana cedis.
The viral photo elevated the standard of your regular ‘gari soakings’ with a mouth-watering description to explain why the hotel should probably sell the menu at a cut-throat price.
A copy of the viral post which Kasatintin.com sighted read:
‘Cassava flakes, smoked nuts, sugar, ice cube milk, fresh skimmed milk, water, shaved coconuts-145gh cedis’.
