President John Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners nationwide.
This decision is based on the recommendation of the Prisons Service Council and in consultation with the Council of State, and in line with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
A total of 1,014 prisoners were recommended for consideration, however the figure was reduced to 998 prisoners following further assessment.
The amnesty covers several categories of prisoners breakdown as follows:
First-time offenders: 787
Death sentences commuted to life imprisonment: 87
Life sentences commuted to 20 years’ definite term: 51
Seriously ill prisoners: 33
Prisoners over 70 years old (irrespective of offence): 36
Nursing mothers: 2
Special petitions: 2
On social media, people are asking if Nana Agradaa, who was recently convicted, is part of the prisoners who have been pardoned by President Mahama.
Agradaa’s name is in the social media trends just after the presidential amnesty was announced.
For now, the list of prisoners who have received amnesty has not been made public. This makes it a bit difficult to know the actual fate of self-acclaimed evangelist, Nana Agradaa.
