A 59-year-old grandmother, Izabel Cardoso de Andrade, has been arrested in Brazil for allegedly poisoning her two grandchildren with a homemade cake.
The children had visited Izabel for summer holidays in São Francisco, eastern Brazil.
One of the victims, Alana dos Santos Cardoso Marques,9 tragically died after consuming the cake, while her sister,11 survived with milder symptoms.
Kasatintin.com gathered that both children began vomiting and complaining of severe stomach pain after eating the cake. Alana’s condition worsened rapidly, and she died shortly after arrival at the hospital.
Authorities collected samples of the cake and found traces of terbufos.
Investigations found traces of terbufos in the cake. The family cat which tasted the cake also died of liver failure, further pointing to poisoning.
Terbufos is a highly toxic pesticide that attacks the central nervous system.
Izabel Cardoso de Andrade was arrested on September 19, 2025, and her lawyer claims she cooperated with investigators and allowed searches at her home.
