Starting August 3, 2025, National Service personnel in Ghana will undertake mandatory military training as part of their service.

The arrangement is under the initiative, National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP).

Service personnel will receive up to two months of composite basic military drills.

Management of the National Service Authority on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 held talks with the Military High Command towards the implementation of the plan to post service personnel to the security service.

Brigadier General Amoah-Boakye, who represented the Military High Command at the meeting pledged the Ghana Armed Forces’ support for the programme, stressing the Force’s readiness to deliver the necessary training when the programme officially rolls out.

The National Service Authority (Act 1119) of 2024 mandates that all Ghanaian citizens who have completed tertiary education are required to undertake national service.

The plan by government to have military training as part of the National Service Scheme is intended to enhance the physical and mental well-being of national service personnel and instill a sense of patriotism and discipline, which are critical for nation-building.

Even before its full implementation, some students have raised concerns about the mandatory nature of the training, particularly for individuals with health conditions or those who may not be physically able to endure it.

Check out some interesting comments on social media below.

Kwasi Owusu Anahoma wrote: NSA is not introducing rather they are “re-introducing” the military training for personnel which I took part in 1997.

This training had been in existence for decades but had not been implemented consistently over the years.

Science Ghana: ‘Ghana. The funding for that unnecessary military training could rather be used to pay NSS personnel well who deserve not less than GH₵3000 per month. The resources could also be used to support startups.

Darlene Adusei: ‘Long overdue, country of 33M 15-18k military. I hope they’re trained as reserves cos we need it. And I hope they don’t wind up like those in the traffic extorting money in their case bully people sale of military’.

Millionaire added ‘…they will finish and still stay home for their parents to feed them, instead of government creating more jobs so they can employ this is what they are rather thinking Awurade yesu eeii’.

Ghana’s President John Mahama has sparked controversy after he was seen in a military uniform a public function. Watch the video below for more.
