Has the Akufo-Addo led government lost focus?
His Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has come under attacks after he asked citizens to make voluntary contributions of GH₵100 per month to support the construction of a temple for the nation.
Actress Lydia Forson has described the move as a misplaced priority. A lot of Ghanaians seem to agree with her, charging government to rather raise funds to construct more hospitals, roads and schools that will benefit the masses.

But Finance Minister disclosed on Thursday that the ongoing National Cathedral project situated in Accra will be available for use on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 to mark the 67th Independence Day of Ghana.
‘Upon completion, the National Cathedral would provide a sacred space for formal religious activities of State and symbolise the enormous contribution of faith to Nation Building’, Ken Ofori-Atta stated during the presentation of the 2021 Mid-Year Review Budget Statement and Economic Policy in Parliament.
He said ‘An initiative – the 100-Cedis-a-Month Club, also dubbed ‘Ketewa biara nsua’ – would be launched by the Trustees of the National Cathedral on 12th August 2021, to give as many Ghanaians as possible the opportunity to be part of the history to build the National Cathedral’.
He projected that one million Ghanaians will generously donate GH₵100 every month through the short code *979# as a way of ‘adding their names to the historic coalition that would build the National Cathedral to the glory of God, and the edification of our nation and its people’.
Background of the Construction of the National Cathedral
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo laid the foundation stone for the National Cathedral on March 5, 2020 at a colourful event attended by leadership of major Christian congregations, government officials, ambassadors, traditional authorities and a cross-section of citizens.
He is constructing the temple in fulfilment of a personal promise he made to God to help him become President of Ghana.
A key talking point about the event was the importation of a sacred stone from Jerusalem which Akufo-Addo dropped into the first digging at the project site.
Reports said the Israeli Ambassador Shani Cooper presented the stone to President Akufo-Addo.
