Some medical practitioners have prescribed cat meat as a treatment to boost the immune system of his patients.
It is claimed that cat meat contains high levels of protein, low levels of cholesterol and low levels of saturated fat which helps the human immune system.
But it may soon be illegal to eat either cat meat or dog meat in Ghana.
An international animal rights activist, Miss Natasha Coolun has petitioned the Government of Ghana to ban the sale of such animals for human consumption.
Natasha argued in the petition sighted by Kasatintin.com that ‘Dogs and cats are not food, but loyal companion animals that should be treated with kindness and respect, not brutalised and eaten’.
She said that in Ghana and other African countries, those animals are kept under unhygienic conditions, which promote the spread of fatal diseases.
Natasha’s petition to government read, ‘The World Health Organisations has confirmed that these global live animal markets must be closed as they are at the root of COVID-19 and are also a breeding ground for the spread of other fatal diseases.
‘The brutal dog and cat meat trade is putting human health at risk from consumption of dogs and cats in form of Cholera, Rabies and other deadly diseases and now COVID 19‘.
The animal rights activist further noted that the trade in dogs and cats was the main reason tourists and investors were not interested in visiting Ghana.
On this score she urged government ‘to ban the demonic dog and animal sacrifices and the barbaric dog and cat meat trade in Africa. Like many harmful and outdated practices in history, these barbaric animal sacrifices must also be abolished’.
Natasha also called on government to take steps and ban wildlife trade, dog racing and dog fighting and ‘implement enforceable laws to protect these animals from harm’.
Dog meat and cat meat eaters are praying hard that government will throw this petition in the litter bin.
