Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari has died on Sunday,July 13,2025 at the age of 82.
The presidency and Buhari’s aide have confirmed the news.
Current President Bola Tinubu revealed in a statement that his predecessor died in London at about 4:30 pm (1530 GMT) ‘following a prolonged illness’. However, he did not disclose the nature of the illness.
Garba Shehu, who served as Spokesman for Buhari also mentioned in a social media post ‘The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon in a clinic in London’.
Buhari first governed Nigeria in the 1980s but as a military ruler. He reinvented himself as a ‘converted democrat’ and served two terms from 2015 to 2023.
The health status of the late President attracted wide criticism during his tenure, especially, times he took a long break from public office to seek medical treatment.
