Reports are rife on social media that there is a coup in Congo-Brazzaville.
It is alledged that the military has successfully removed 79-year-old President Denis Nguesso from office on Sunday.
President Nguesso was away in New York, participating in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly when the said military coup occured.
President Nguesso has been in power for the past 39 years uninterrupted.He became the country’s leader after staging a coup in 1979.
Congo’s Information Minister Thierry Moungalla has dismissed the viral news, saying ‘The government categorically denies the spread of false information. We wish to reassure the public of the prevailing tranquility and encourage everyone to carry on with their daily activities calmly’.
