An aged Kenyan man identified as Gideon Kisira Cherowo has taken his son to court over a demand for monthly maintenance money.
Mr Cherowo, 73 is demanding that his 48-year-old son, Washington Chepkombe Cherowo gives him 20 percent of his monthly income to cover the expenses he incurred to make him who is today.
The aged father argued in court that his son has abandoned him and refused to send him any money despite the fact that he is working and receiving fat salary.
Cherowo told the Kitale High Court that things were presently difficult for him and his wife and thus prayed the court to compel Washington to give them money for their upkeep.
He justified that he sold his land to send his son to school (from primary to university) and also paid his dowry.
‘I used all the resources I had to enable the defendant to be in a good position so that he can help us. Right now, my wife and I are in a horrible state yet we have a son who is working’, Cherowo said.
Portions of the plaintiff’s civil suit at the high court further stated that:
‘I sold my land in Cheptais, Bungoma, to educate him from primary to university. I also gave him a quarter of an acre. I even went ahead to pay dowry for the defendant’s wife, which cost me four cows and some amount of money, whose sum I cannot recall’.
‘I pray that since he has a good salary, I request 20 per cent of his salary to be given to me as the father’, Gideon Kisira Cherowo concluded.
Washington Chepkombe Cherowo is the eldest of four siblings and he is the only one employed amongst them.
He works at the Kenya Airports Authority, reports said.
Mr Cherowo’s family lives in a mud house in his village in western Kenya.
He claims that his ‘ungrateful’ son, Washington Chepkombe has not visited home for the last 17 years and the family has asked for his help in vain.
Mr Cherowo told the court that he could not afford the services of a lawyer and brought his youngest son as a witness.
The son testified in court that his eldest brother had abandoned the family after landing a job in the capital Nairobi.
