It has emerged that Ghana is indebted to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and this has to do with tons of cereals the country borrowed from ECOWAS to solve urgent food security challenges in 2018 under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The current government must settle this liability.
Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, during the launch of the government’s Feed Ghana Programme on April 12, 2025 disclosed that ECOWAS leaders recently visited his office to request the repayment of the food stocks it received about 7 years ago.
‘They said Ghana owes them rice and maize of about 27,000 tons, which we borrowed in 2018, and that they are asking that we refund it’, the Agric Minister said.
According to him, he has requested a one-year grace period–on behalf of President John Mahama– to mobilise the quantities needed for repayment without compromising domestic food needs.
Mr Opoku stressed that the ‘Feed Ghana Programme’ will be successful and ‘Once we commence the Feed Ghana initiative, we will come and repay the loan in one year’s time’.
