VIDEO: Mahama election petition (full video)

The Supreme Court wil likely commence the hearing of the 2020 election petition filed by John Dramani Mahama today, Thursday January 14, 2021.

The hearing is expected to last for 42days.

Mr Mahama, who is the presidential candidate of the opposition NDC is seeking the apex court to annul the election results which the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa relied upon to declare NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner.

He argues that the figures the EC declared for the said election was full of errors.

Mahama further wants the court to direct the Chairperson of EC to re-run the election as none of the presidential candidates including Akufo-Addo obtained more than 50% of the votes cast.

Both Akufo-Addo and Jean Mensa filed their individual responses to the petitioner’s claims at the Supreme Court thus paving way for the latter to sit on the matter from today as required by law.

Earlier, the legal team of Mahama filed a motion to be allowed to correct a clerical mistake in their petition.

The existing petition requested the apex court to order a re-run of the elections between himself and the Electoral Commission instead of between him and Mr. Akufo-Addo.

This motion is likely to be heard as the 2020 election petition proceedings starts today.

Counsels for Mahama want the election petition to be shown live on national television. The motion is expected to be moved in court at 9.30am today.
